Space Needle Set
Ultimately, an amalgamation of the floors in the real Seattle Space Needle were created to accommodate the different scenes, such as an engagement party, a tourist destination, and scene where the Space Needle starts on fire. Although the set is not truly 1:1, it heavily incorporates details from the real Space Needle.
The Art Department created a floor of the Space Needle to appear in multiple scenes throughout the season. Some of my contributions were the 3D models pictured here, which were used by set designers and the VFX team to design the final set. I also created a model to test the feasibility of using a virtual stage for the Space Needle set.
Space Needle Elevator
Another area recreated for the show was the Space Needle’s elevator. For this set, I created construction documents for several of the elevator’s details such as the railings, button panels, cable system, and lighting features. In order to be as accurate as possible we had someone remotely taking photos of the Space Needle, as well as utilizing reference photos/video I found online from tourists.
Pride Parade
A challenge for the team this season was a full Pride Parade featuring multiple floats, banners, emergency vehicles, and a small town-sized collection of vendor tents.
For this set I conceptualized several of the parade floats. These concepts went through several passes of design changes, but the shape and color of the designs shown here were ultimately constructed for the episode. I also organized all graphics required for the scene using Sketchup, Layout and Illustrator.
Additional Work
Since this was the show’s final season, the showrunners wanted to be extra ambitious with some of the sets and stories. On this show I worked on getting better at organizing design intention and communicating between different departments and remote workers.
